Health insurance after losing job-based coverage

Short answer: If you lose qualifying job-based health coverage, Marketplace special enrollment and COBRA may be relevant options. Medicaid, CHIP or another employer plan may also apply. Confirm eligibility, enrollment windows and effective dates through the official program.

Confirm the coverage end date first

The last day at work and the last day of health benefits may not be the same. Ask the employer or administrator for written confirmation of the coverage end date, covered dependents and available continuation information.

Keep enrollment notices and evidence of lost coverage. Do not assume a replacement plan begins the moment the old plan ends; verify any gap and the conditions for the start date.

Compare the paths available to you

PathQuestions to resolve
MarketplaceDoes your loss qualify for special enrollment? What income estimate, documents, enrollment deadline and start date apply?
COBRA or applicable continuationAre you eligible? What is the full cost, election deadline and duration?
Spouse or other employer planDoes a special enrollment opportunity apply, and when must you request it?
Medicaid / CHIPDo current household and state eligibility rules apply?

Protect continuity of care

Check the exact network, medicines, deductibles and authorizations under each available option. A new plan can have different doctors or drug benefits even when its premium looks attractive.

Hypothetical example: keeping access to an ongoing specialist may change how you compare continuation coverage with a Marketplace plan. This is a question to investigate, not a guarantee that one option is preferable or covers the service.

Use current official guidance for deadlines

HealthCare.gov explains the Marketplace loss-of-coverage pathway, but different programs and employer arrangements have different rules. This guide intentionally does not turn a generic enrollment window into your personal deadline.
