Klint insurance guide
Auto insurance, in human words
Short answer: Auto insurance can help pay for liability to other people and, if you buy the relevant coverages, damage to your own car. A quote is useful only when you compare the same drivers, vehicles, limits, deductibles and policy period.
What the main coverages mean
| Coverage | What to check |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Potential responsibility for injury to others or damage to their property. Check separate limits and state requirements. |
| Collision | Damage to your car from a collision, subject to the policy and deductible. A lender may require it. |
| Comprehensive | Certain non-collision losses such as theft, hail or fire. Read exclusions, glass provisions and the deductible. |
| Uninsured/underinsured motorist | Protection relating to drivers with no insurance or insufficient limits. Benefits and requirements vary by state. |
Compare the details, not just the price
Ask whether each premium covers the same number of months and includes the same fees. Confirm every driver and vehicle, the garaging location, and whether personal driving, delivery or business use is included. A low advertised payment may not describe the total policy cost.
For example, two quotes with different collision deductibles do not give you the same out-of-pocket exposure. Compare both the payment and the amount you would need to contribute after an eligible loss. Do not describe a quote as “full coverage” without listing its actual coverages.
- Match liability limits and deductibles.
- Check rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and endorsements separately.
- Confirm the effective date in writing before canceling an existing policy.
State rules and personal circumstances matter
Minimum requirements, no-fault rules, rating practices and proof-of-insurance filings differ across US states. This page does not give a state-specific minimum or promise eligibility after a lapse, DUI or other change. Use your state insurance department and a licensed producer to verify the current rule for your situation.
Klint can explain wording and organize supplied quotes, but cannot issue an insurer quote, bind coverage or confirm that a particular claim will be paid.
Frequently asked questions
Does liability coverage repair my own car?
Liability generally concerns responsibility to others. Damage to your own car normally requires applicable collision or comprehensive coverage; your policy controls.
Is the state minimum always enough?
A legal minimum is not a personalized assessment of your financial exposure. Discuss limits with a licensed professional and check your state’s current requirements.
